Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2 Install Notes
Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2
1. If the client has purchased Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition, it does not include Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The client must purchase Microsoft SQL Server 2005 as a standalone install.
Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Edition includes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition .

The following link provides the comparative list of features between the Standard and Premium editions of Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2.

2. Reach uses virtual directories. When the installer for Reach is setting up the virtual directories, Internet Information server automatically restricts access to only loopback and the local subnet.
Loopback:
127.0.0.1
Local Subnet:
Usually 192.168.16.0/255.255.255.0
There are two ways of fixing this.
1. Allow all IPs to access the virtual directories.
2. If you happen to know the list of IPs that will be accessing the virtual directories, restrict access to those IPs.
3. Reach is able to use all versions of Internet Information Server security. However, the only one that is able to talk through proxies and firewalls is Basic Authentication. Basic Authentication sends usernames and passwords as clear text and is not desirable so we must use SSL with Basic Authentication.
Microsoft Small Business Server has a Certificate Authority so it is not necessary to purchase one from an external Certificate Authority such as Thawte or Verizon. However, you may with to do this if you have a pre-existing web site on the machine that will also contain the Reach virtual directories.
If not, follow the steps below.
Requirements:
Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 with the Certificate Authority installed and configured.
a. Create a Certificate Signing Request with Microsoft Internet Information Server
b. Sign the certificate with either an external Certificate Authority or the Certification Authority that comes with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2.
c. Install the certificate into Microsoft Internet Information Server.
d. Export the certficate in DER format. You must export the certificate in DER format as this is the only format Windows Mobile 5.0 can read.
e. Copy the certificate to the machine that has Microsoft ActiveSync installed and copy the certificate the device using Microsoft ActiveSync.
f. Double click the certificate to install it into Windows Mobile 5.0 (Only required if you signed the certificate with the Certification Authority in Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2). If you have used an external Certificate Authority, their root certificate should already be in the Trusted Root Certificates on the device.
4. Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 is shipped by default with IMAP disabled. You must enable the IMAP server so that inbound messages from devices are read into Reach. The service name is Microsoft Exchange IMAP4. Change the settings for this service from “Disable” to “Automatic” and then start the service.
5. Reach uses an e-mail address of
Reach@localdomain.local
in order to receive messages from devices that send messages via Microsoft ActiveSync. It is important to note that if your installation will be using Public Folders, create a Reach user prior to creating the public folder. The reason for this is that if you create a Reach public folder, the public folder will then take the e-mail address of
Reach@localdomain.local
.
For Example
A company is called Test.
The domain would then be called test.local in Active Directory. Hence, if you do not change the Email Address, all inbound messages from devices will never arrive and be processed by Reach from
